They say, and they lie...

This time, the phrase came back to me as we heard, from Joe Biden and from his State Secretary, Blinken, about their high hopes of achieving an agreement to end the war on Gaza.

More than once I wanted to write a text that would open with this phrase: ‘They say, and they lie…'.

Much can be said starting with this assertion. Many do, indeed, say much and lie much.

The phrase accompanies me maybe since childhood, since the first time I heard the story, told as if it were a true one, that ends with it.
